A sprawling, paved, pedestrian-only plaza covering a total area of 3,700 sq m, Senado (“senate” in Portuguese) Square is one of the principal focal points of the World Heritage-listed Historic Centre of Macau. Triangular in shape, it connects key areas of Macau Peninsula and as one of the four largest squares in the city, surrounded by shops, cafés and restaurants, it remains the most popular venue for public gatherings such as flea markets, as well as performances and celebrations. At its centre of this square underpinned by elegantly swirling Portuguese paving stands a fountain that complements the beauty of the surrounding European buildings, which are dramatically illuminated at night. These pastel-coloured neoclassical structures, many of which are protected for conservation, include the former Senate building (Leal Senado); Macau General Post Office; the century-old Hotel Central, which was once the tallest building in Macau, and the imposing Holy House of Mercy (Santa Casa de Misericordia), which dates back to 1569 and variously served as a medical clinic, orphanage and sailors’ widows’ refuge.
